This is the second part of the music selection blog. Looking specifically about option 3, music themes.
Presented below are a few of the possible options based on parties I have seen go well and music choice that get people up to dance. These can be a theme across the whole night or just something to keep coming back to or even just an hour or two (where you can pick more than one theme).
Till Death us do Party!
If you grew up or went to uni in the early 2000s this could be the theme for you. Some people call it Emo Music but what this theme will bring you the best of Rock, Punk, Alternative and maybe even dipping into Grunge. Starting with tracks made famous by the American Pie movies including Wheatus, James, and Sum 41, to American Rock Bands like Green Day, Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. English bands like Busted and McFly. Emo Pop and Pop Punk bands like Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, Paramore and solo artists like Avril Lavigne and Olivia Rodrigo.
Keeping it family friendly aggressive screamo tracks would be avoided in favour of the better known songs that were often seen on MTV and VH1. Despite sounding depressing in nature parties where I've performed these songs really go down well with young and old alike. The theme can be expanded buy adding in older Punk, Rock and Glam songs from the 70's and 80's as well as classics from my Britpop and Indie collections.
The best of Kisstory!
Made famous by the Kisstory radio station but also stuff you will have heard in many clubs and bars. This is a large pot of songs to pick from but only the best will make it to your dancefloor. I'll select from the best Anthems, Throwbacks and Old Skool Classics which never fail to get people dancing.
Every generation has its pop anthems, songs that are universally loved, has uplifting power and creates powerful feelings. Throwbacks are songs that take you back in time and remind you of when you first heard them at a party, they are timeless and fun. Old Skool again refers to music from a particular time, normally 70s-90s but often now even the 00s. Old Skool is a prefix and can be Hip Hop, Rap, Dance, Pop, RnB.
The majority of the songs will be from the 90s and 00s with genres like electronica, EDM, UK garage, dance, hip-hop, RnB, acid house and alternative dance. It's all about nostalgia and the biggest Artists and Bands in this theme. A great compliment to extend the party is an increase in 90s dance and 00's commercial tracks followed by a higher tempo Clubland set.
Ibiza Day and Night!
This Balearic island is famous for being all about music, DJ's and partying, so why not bring this vibe to your event. Best known for various electronic music genres expect to start with some chilled lounge music from the likes of Café Del Mar. and Cafe Mambo then moving on genres such as house, techno, trance made famous by the many visiting DJ's.
Using soundtracks from the Ministry of Sound, Hed Kandi, Cafe Del Mar and classic DJ's such as Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Dave Pearce, Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold, I'll try to recreate your Ibiza experience or perhaps that of another party destination such as Faliraki, Ayia Napa or Playa de las Américas.
This set tends to span from the 90's to 10's but can include some tunes from the last decade and current chart so as not to leave out current DJs and producers like Duke Dumont, Gorgon City, Calvin Harris and MK.
I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor!
Want the best of Indie, Alternate Rock and Britpop to be the soundtrack to your big night? Do you love rock and pop played by a real band? From a smooth start with songs from The Smiths, Stone Roses and MGMT on to absolute bangers by the Killers, Arctic Monkeys and The Fratelli's.
I will get your air guitar strumming to the max as I add in some classic rock tracks, some of the best early indie tracks and some festival classics. We can even add in Emo and Pop Punk keeping the night flowing and the music real.
There are just too many bands to list on the Indie and Alternative scene but I will play popular songs that people will know and love to get the dance floor bouncing.
