Don't Limit yourself to Recommended DJ's

Bride Dancing

So let me start another blog post in what sounds like contradiction. I myself am a recommended supplier at a few wedding venue and use it to try to secure bookings.

The truth is that just because a venue liked me enough to put me on the list does not mean I am a good fit for everyone one of their clients. Many venues maintain a supplier list not because they believe they are the best DJ's they have seen but because it is something handy to give clients who ask about suppliers.

The Pitfalls of Preferred Suppliers

Many of the companies on supplier lists are not there based on ability. Some might have close relationships with the staff, have been before and asked about joining the lists or attend wedding fayres at the venue. This doesn't mean that they will fit what you are looking for or even be available on your date, especially as many people who look to get on supplier lists do so with multiple venues.

Some suppliers offer a discount to get on the lists, some places even use the dreaded resident DJs. Ask yourself one question before going ahead and speaking to them (or checking them out online). Are they recommending this DJ because they are genuinely the best or is it just convenient for them?

Look Beyond the List

Some of the best suppliers don't want to be tied into venues. All 3 of the ones I am listed for asked me if I wanted on the list. Me being honest, its nice to get the leads but I love my travelling and getting about. I don't want to be at the same place week in week out.

Upon reviewing the list, you will quickly notice that some of the DJs may not be suitable. This could be due to their vibe or music preference, pricing, service, or ethics. I still think the best way to find the right DJ for you is to look at websites, then checkout Instagram and if you like what you see speak to the DJ and ask them questions.

Other Suppliers

Another similar pitfall is asking your other wedding suppliers to recommend a DJ. There are so many networks and cliques about you seldom get an answer based on them being a good fit for you. Each party and wedding is different and you really need someone with experience and adaptability over doing the same venues with the same suppliers over and over.
