How do I go about choosing the music?

Updated: Jul 9

A most excellent questions and I'm glad you clicked and came to look at the options and what I can do for you. This blog post is here to help you with getting the music right for your event. I will present to you 3 ways to go about this below.

Option 1

You've hired a DJ with decades of experience well over 1000 events and 400 weddings. I actually do know how to get a party going and rock a wedding. Give me as little or much guidance as you want via quick message or email and let me do my thing. Make me work for the money and let me show you how an excellent DJ will play the songs you didn't know you wanted to hear. To go with this just drop me an email or message, asking me to do what I do, and feel free to give me a steer. (Eg. We love Dance Music, especially the club stuff from 90's and 00s. Hold off on the cheese line dances like YMCA).

Option 2

Use the planning tool or create your own Spotify list for me to work from as a guide. I suggest around 20-30 tracks* as this will cover the majority of the night (outside of the warm up, food and obligatory guest requests). This leaves me room to plug the gaps and transition between genres so you get a seamlessly programmed night.

To go with this option either complete the song selection on the planner or send me a link to your Spotify list. I'll do the rest putting them in order and trying to play when appropriate.

Option 3

Choose a theme for your night. In my next post which you can read by clicking here, I will look at adding a theme to your event and how it can influence the style of music played. This could be to match your musical preference, remind you of a holiday or club night where you met or just to remind you of days gone by.

The theme can run from 1 hr to the whole of the night or you can have more than one. Its there to give the music a direction and to control expectations. I've even had one client tell me she couldn't have the type of music she liked at her wedding as it was too out there but we made it work.

*Why 20-30 tracks? A standard 5 hr evening party will see me play between 80 and 90 songs. The first part of the night is guests arriving or coming back to the reception, its great to cover this with upbeat background music. Then comes the cake cut and first dance (and any additional dances you request). There is often an hour already gone.

Your guests will come to me with an average of 10 requests across the night. To make sure the music doesn't just chop and change and so people can get up and dance to a handful of songs me as your DJ needs about 20 transition songs to keep them engaged.

As you can see there isn't a huge amount of wiggle room, the best parties flow with good programming playing the right songs at the right time.

Want to discuss the music further?

To make sure everything is perfect please drop me a message or a call if there is something special or extra you need from me as you DJ. In the past I've been asked if make specific mixes for first dances, advise on the perfect daddy/daughter song, recreate a grooms clubbing days, remind a bride of her Hen Party.
